"One of the good things that is going on this year is that we are almost out of space, which is a great thing to happen to a college because we are growing and blooming," says Residence Life Coordinator Mark Maynard.
GB and Purcell are the only two dorms on campus that have rooms available. Piedmont currently has around 380 residential students and according to Maynard 93 male students and 115 female students have been accepted for the fall semester.
Because of this growth Piedmont is developing some new ideas for housing plans. The new plan for housing includes splitting the dorms up by class. Freshmen will be living in Purcell and GB, sophomores in Wallace and Johnson, juniors in Swanson and Johnson and seniors in Mayflower. Since there is no sophomore dorm for male students so sophomores will still be living in Purcell and some might even be forced to have a roommate. Female sophomores will also be in the situation of sharing rooms. "I don't think that it is fair that we do not get a discount since we have to share a room, when prior sophomore classes got to have a room to themselves at the same rate," says Freshman Rebekah Scruggs, who will be sharing a room next semester. Seniors are also facing a housing issue because Mayflower has been completely filled and many seniors are still not signed up for rooms. These seniors will be living in Purcell or GB.
President Cleere explained that Piedmont is running out of space and the only issue with making classes live together is that we wanted Mayflower a senior only dorm.
President Cleere also mentioned the possibility of a new dorm or two. "Discussions about a new dorm will not begin until the fall when all of the new students arrive." Cleere also mentioned the idea of a $500 housing deposit to reserve rooms. "I think this would be a good idea because it would give us a better idea about who is actually coming housing issues."
