A typical day in the school of nursing quickly turned chaotic for senior nursing students. An announcement from Piedmont's administration sent the students running for GB Hall.
Dr. Linda Scott, Dean of the School of Nursing, organized a mock boiler room explosion in Getman-Babcock Hall on Thursday, Feb. 15.
Habersham EMT, the Demorest police and campus police were just a few at Piedmont helped make this happen.
"This drill is organized to set-up a real-life scenario for nursing students," said Scott. "We hope this helps give the students an understanding of working with victims of a disaster.
Junior nursing majors played the role of the victims at the scene.
"There was a pregnant woman with contractions, a woman with two broken legs and a few victims who died at the scene of the explosion," said Rachel Holland, senior nursing major and participant in the disaster drill.
"Even though I knew it was a drill, my hands were shaking and my adrenaline was high," said Holland.
Holland says that she was able to take what she has learned in the school of nursing to apply her skills during the drill.
"This helped me realize I'm ready for a career in the nursing field."
