Piedmont College remembers Dean of Emerita Mary Lane

Mary Charlotte Lane, Former Dean of Emerita and Professor of English and Religion, passed away Friday, February 16, 2007 at the age of 92.
Lane came to Piedmont College after receiving her doctorate in 1974. While at Piedmont she held the positions of Processor of Education and Religion from 1974 to 1987 and in 1978 became Dean of the College. After retiring from Piedmont College she became the Archivist at Piedmont College and became Dean of Emerita and wrote publications such as The Centennial History of Piedmont College.
Before joining the Piedmont faculty, Lane served 28 years the United States Army where she retired as a Colonel. While she was in the Army she received many honors including Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army Meritorious Service Metal, and the Army Commendation Metal.
In honor of Lane and her mother, Mary Cole Lane, there are three education scholarships given to students annually. The scholarships are given to the top education students at the college and one is given to a student studying at a graduate level.

I knew Mary Charlotte Lane while serving in the military, and I'm a resident of South Hadley, Mass., where she attended Mount Holyoke College in the Class of 1937. (Continued…)
