"He can never study and still make top three in the class," says Bradley Roland, accounting major at Piedmont College.
Roland is speaking about his fellow accounting student Dustin Farist. With plans to graduate in December 2008, Farist was surprised when he walked into his accounting class on April 3. Raymond Kreiner and Janet Forney, both professors in the accounting department, stood at the front of the room. Students suppressed smiles.
Farist thought everyone was waiting for him because he was one of the last to enter class. However, as soon as he sat down, Forney instructed him to go to the front because she had an announcement.
Forney explained that Farist was the recipient of the 2008 Academic Excellence Award. Speechless, Farist smiled and accepted the award.
The Academic Excellence Award is an annual award sponsored by the Educational Foundation of the Georgia Society of CPAs.
Each year the foundation endows Piedmont College with one award to honor its top senior graduate who majored in accounting with the highest overall academic average. The recipient receives a certificate and a cash award of $500.
The cash award isn't specified for school purposes only. The check is made out directly to the recipient. He or she is free to spend the money however he or she wants to.
Farist grinned with pleasure after receiving the award and thanked his professors.
"I had to keep it a secret because I knew he probably wouldn't come to class," Forney says. "But he definitely deserves this. He's had the highest overall average and has blown the department away by how good he is at everything he does."
