Issue date: 10/6/08 Section: Connections
For many October is immediately related to Halloween; October is the month-long celebration of Halloween. We dress up and pretend to be something we're not. It's all fun.
There's a darker side to the already dark holiday:haunted houses.
Haunted houses are a million dollar-a-year industry, which is impressive for a one month out of the year business.
Why do people like paying to be scared?
Psychology major Laurel Carter says, "Some people like to be scared because it releases hormones such as adrenaline, which can intensify the senses."
Atlanta is home to one of the best haunted houses in America. Previously ranked number one for several years, but now number three, Netherworld Haunted House has made itself iconic for Halloween lovers in Georgia.
It usually consists of two or three Hollywood quality houses.
In previous years, it has employed 3-D glasses to increase the horror.
Monsters are volunteers who simply love the season. The monsters roam the parking lot as a line of thrill-seekers wraps itself around the entire complex.
The different houses all have stories associated with them that are changed every year. You can read them at fearworld.com.
The cost is $18 for one house, and $25 to go to both. It's a little costly but is worth it. It's a massive complex and takes about an hour to go through. I've gone every year, and every year they outdo themselves. This isn't a plug, but a review.
This year, Netherworld will really have to step it up after being blasted back two spaces.
