Issue date: 2/9/09 Section: Connections
With more open communication happening on the web, it seems like everyday there is a new social networking site, like MySpace or Facebook popping up. There are also all of those media networking sites such as YouTube, Hulu.com and Last.FM. There is so much available content on the web now, you can find nearly everything you want.
Trying to stay up-to-date with all of those sites, you need about 10 hours each day. If you want to watch your favorite TV shows, and then find trailers for new movies, you'll spend another large portion of your time doing just that.
Now there is a place where you can combine features from all of those sites. Boxee is a new program that you can download to your computer and access TV shows, music videos and other web content from free services, such as those listed above. It is considered a Social Media Center according to their Web site.
YouTube's motto is "Broadcast Yourself." Boxee's motto should be something like: Broadcast Other People. Basically, once you've downloaded the software, you can find web media to watch or listen to. Then you share that with your friends and family who are connected on Boxee. The social networking concept comes in with the recommendations of content as well with the available chat feature.
With Boxee, you are connected to many types of contents. You can watch news stories from CNN and CBS. TV shows, movies and songs from Hulu, YouTube, and Netflix.
The free software is available on Mac, Windows and Linux computers, but is still in the Alpha testing phase. If you have the right set-up you can actually connect your computer to a television and watch all of the content from Boxee on your TV. You can download Boxee at www.boxee.tv.
