Earth Day comes to Athens
by Heather Cheesman
Issue date: 4/20/09 Section: Athens
Earth day was originally started as a national grassroots campaign spearheaded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin in 1970. On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans across the country took it upon themselves to stand up for the environment and try to force a change. They wanted the politicians to take the issue as serious as they did. In 1990, the initiative was taken globally for the first time and 200 million people in 141 countries rallied to the cause.
In 2009, the world will again stand up for the environment for its 39th year in a row, and the Piedmont Athens campus will be among the 1500 college campuses celebrating with the rest of the world.
On April 22, the Athens campus will culminate its celebration by planting new shrubbery as a way to help the environment. Events will be happening all week including free information tables in the lobby, the sale of environmentally friendly bags, a movie and drawing.
All activities are sponsored by the QEP Committee, Leadership Council and Sigma Alpha Pi. Please take time to come by and see how you affect our environment and what you can do to help save planet earth.
