Summer vacation means warm weather, sleeping in, and relaxation. This in not true for Piedmont though. Once summer hits, workers get started on the annual renovations. New roofs, coats of paint and windows are some of the upgrades students will see from this summer's renovations.

G-B and Purcell are the main dorms that will be receiving upgrades. G-B will be receiving a new coat of paint and some carpet will be removed. Purcell will receive the most work with new windows, shower repairs, and a gutter.

Scott Tyson, sophomore, thinks that the shower renovations are a great thing.

"I love how the showers have three temperatures," he says. "Cold, Blazing Hot, and Ouch there goes my skin. I think that building could use a good once over to fix some of the problems."

"They are old buildings," says Dr. Bowen, vice president of finance. "This is a continuation of the past upgrades. Because of annual wear and tear, it is a constant process."

Time and budget permitting, administration also hopes to tear out the fixed cabinets.

If the cabinet project is a success, G-B could also see that happening within its rooms.

The cafeteria, library, botanical center and an Athens building will be getting upgrades. The cafeteria will have plumbing work done to correct the drainage issue that kept occurring this year and the service area will be reconfigured. New equipment will also be purchased for the cafeteria. The Matins Botanical Center will receive new siding.

The Arrendale Library and Lane Hall on the Athens campus will both be receiving new roofs.

Many new areas will be completed as well. The amphitheater is planned to be completed sometime in June with seating for 500. They are also installing a small restroom facility beside it. The new dorm will be started and is planned to be complete by January 2010.

Painting is a major project for the summer session. The railings on Stewart will be painted along with some of the baseball stadium. The stadium had some sun damage requiring the new paint job.

All of this construction is part of the capital plan that falls under the annual operating budget. Piedmont renovates every summer all over campus. They usually have 10 to 12 projects at one time that have to be completed over an eight week period.

"I believe that renovation over the summer would be beneficial," says Kim Faulkner, sophomore. "The students for the most part would not be present for any harm or inconvenience to happen to them."
