Piedmont improved its conference record to 5-4 and a healthy 19-17 overall. The Lions lost a chance to walk away with a sweep after taking the first two games of the series. However, the men dropped the doubleheader finale on April 18.
Junior Spencer Shelton shined in the opening game of the series, tossing his third complete game of the season while allowing only one earned run on five hits, two walks and eight strikeouts. Shelton improved his overall record to 5-2.
The second game of the series gave the Lions a 15-8 win. The offense produced 15 runs on 15 hits, highlighted by a seven-run second inning. Freshman Caleb Cochran earned his first career win with four and two-thirds innings of work.
The Panthers avoided the sweep with an 11-4 win over the Lions. Piedmont committed seven errors that accounted for nine unearned runs in the loss.
Since 2005, the Lions are 11-10 against the Panthers. The rivalry matchup has intensified over the years as both teams usually wind up facing off for the GSAC tournament championship.
Junior Zac Stein led the offense with five hits and four runs scored, while senior Spencer Ventrice tallied four hits, four RBI and two runs scored in the series. Junior Corey Lindsey also chipped in with four hits and four runs scored with two RBI.
Piedmont vies for a non-conference win April 21 when taking on visiting Birmingham Southern College.
