Residence director Leah Della Torre developed the Health and Wellness Club this year.
As an RD, Della Torre is required to head a campus committee; however, after brainstorming the clubs goals, she felt it would benefit students more as a club.
Della Torre says that forming the club also makes it easier to get direct student input and involvement.
The goals of the organization are to provide students with information about staying healthy, well and wise mentally, emotionally, spiritually, sexually and physically.
"The club provides students with a large variety of events that promotes a healthy lifestyle along with support from other students," says Della Torre.
The Health and Wellness Club has many events planned for the year including weekly walks around campus, hikes and a high heels race.
The group also wants to start book exchanges where students pass on motivational books to each other.
Students can also share ideas about healthy living, such as workout routines and how to make healthy snacks or meals in the microwave.
Other initiatives include peer counseling, diet planning, and placing inspirational quotes at different spots on campus.
The club will also be playing host to yoga and pilates nights three times a week. Students meet in a newly refurbished yoga room in the upstairs of Wallace Hall.
Acting as the club sponsor, Della Torre isn' t alone in her mission to heighten health and wellness awareness on campus.
Sophomore residence assistants Justin Doro, Jennifer Fuller and Sasha Ugi are club leaders. The rest of the group consists of other Piedmont students.
The club meets once a month and communicates via e-mail. Della Torre and the leaders meet bi-weekly.
"The goal for health and wellness in this first year is to promote and provide students with experiences which will help them to develop a healthy lifestyle in everyway possible, " says Della Torre.
