On Tuesday, student workers started monitoring visitors in the lobby. All visitors must sign in and out between noon and midnight now in Wallace Hall.
G-B and Purcell are the other dorms that require visitors to sign in.
Resident director over Wallace, Leah Della Torre, says, "A lot of people were upset at first, but it is what's fair."
Sophomore men that live in Purcell still have to have their guests signed in.
The placement of student workers in Wallace is part of the college's plan to create more jobs for students.
This plan is part of the Student Placement program that helps freshmen and sophomore students find jobs on campus.
With this opening, 10 new placements were created for jobs. Della Torre says, "The fastest way to get jobs was to institute another desk worker position."
Student workers also provide a sense of security for the dorm.
Katie Corley, former resident assistant of Wallace, says, "I think they help the safety by giving the residents a sense of security. With desk workers, guys will not be able to walk around freely."
Desk workers also help prevent theft.
"The desk worker is responsible for looking after things the school has provided for the lobby," says Corley.
Some students have responded negatively to the change while others are accepting it.
"I think that it's great that Piedmont is trying to give everyone a job and yes it is annoying to sign someone in, but it takes two seconds. I've noticed a lot of negative energy towards them and people just need to chill," says Amber Eller, sophomore art major.
