The Piedmont College Chamber Singers performed The Poet Sings concert on Nov. 12 in the Center for Worship and Music.
The concert began at 7:30 p.m., when the Piedmont College Chamber Singers performed a piece entitled Arise, Shine, for Thy Light Has Come, composed by Kenneth Jennings.
The group also performed Der Geist hilft unsrer Schwachheit auf, composed by Johann Sebastion Bach.
This piece is known as a motet, which is a term used to indicate elaborate, polyphonic vocal music.
Next, the Chamber Singers performed Eternal Light, Shine in My Heart, composed by Eugene Englert.
The piece is modeled after an ancient prayer and included a solo which was performed by soprano Jara Myers.
Dr. Wallace Hinson, director of the Piedmont College Chamber Singers, often selects pieces by composer Eric Whitacre to perform.
This time, the selected piece was Go, Lovely Rose. The lyrics in this piece come out of a poem written by Edmund Waller.
The song included two solos performed by tenor Brett Bellamy and Soprano Lily Landeros.
"It is my favorite piece out of the ones we performed," says tenor Ian Vencil. "It captured the shortness of life and how beautiful the connections we make with other people in that time are."
The concert ended with two pieces arranged by Moses Hogan.
The first was a traditional spiritual entitled Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit.
It included a solo by Portia Burns.
The second was an upbeat piece entitled Didn't my Lord Deliver Daniel.
Soloists of the piece included sopranos Mary Helen Still and Heather Vaughn and alto Sophia Allison.
The entire concert included 11 pieces and was accompanied by organist Louise Bass.
