Twenty-two high school juniors and seniors spent two days at Piedmont on Nov. 12 and 13. They came for one purpose: Piedmont's Fine Arts College Experience, an event held between the three fine art departments.
During FACE, high school students are each paired with a Piedmont student.
They spend the two days together attending various functions designed to give the prospect a good look at what life would be like as a fine arts major at Piedmont.
"We at admissions believe it is a very effective recruiting tool. We collaborate with the fine arts departments to make it a successful event," says Cindy Peterson, director of undergraduate admissions.
Peterson also says typically half the high school students who attend a FACE event end up enrolling at Piedmont.
This FACE group was the largest in college history.
Each of the three fine arts departments held a special event for the high school students to attend Thursday, as well as classes they could attend on Friday.
In the music department, they attended the Chamber Singers concert, The Poet Sings.
The students could also sign up to take private instrument or voice lessons on Friday morning instead of sitting in on a music class, says Dr. Wallace Hinson, chair of the music department.
He also says he wouldn't do anything differently regarding FACE. "We must be doing something right, because each group gets bigger and bigger each FACE weekend," says Hinson.
In the art department, two high school seniors and two high school juniors sat in on either a graphic design class or a painting class.
They could also visited the Anagama Kiln, which was being fired for the second time in Piedmont history. Once at the kiln, Piedmont students could look inside of it to see items being fired.
High school students who were interested in the theatre department attended a rehearsal of Trojan Women for their special event. The classes offered for the participants to attend were the Theatre 101 class, the directing class, or the stage makeup , says Bill Gabelhausen, chair of the theatre department.
The theatre department also hosted the Swanson Social for the students and their Piedmont College hosts Thursday night.
After the social, the group went on a tour of the Swanson Center and then played theatre games on the Mainstage. Afterwards, Piedmont's newest acting group, the Improv Troupe, gave its premier performance.
The next FACE weekend is planned for Feb. 4-5.
