When I sat down in the Black Box to watch the theatre department's latest production, Trojan Women, I came in not knowing what to expect.
I wasn't disappointed in discovering what is perhaps the one of the saddest plays I've seen.
First of all, the set was gorgeous. The Black Box is a great space for a performance.
I felt that the set design of Trojan Women made use of each inch of the space in that area.
I congratulate the individual who thought of putting sand on the floor.
This was a stunning effect of realism that made me feel as though I was right there with the women of Troy as they mourned their dead.
The screens on the side showing pictures of war and adversity were a unique touch, but I felt more compelled to watch the actors than pay attention to the screens.
I also wasn't as pleased with the effect of fire burning the huts that was through with lights.
I don't know if this couldn't be avoided to even achieve the effect, but I would rather it be lights that I can see than using real fire and endangering the actors and set.
The acting was great.
I love the chorus of women especially.
They were the women of Troy, heartbroken, hurt, and desperately trying to find some hope they could hold on to.
My heart went out to them and felt their sorrow as my own.
Many times I found myself wanting to leap out into the sand to comfort them and defend them from their enemies.
The only problem I had was when Liat Faver first appeared as Hecuba.
I found her voice a little shaky, but it did improve as the play when on, so it wasn't a major turn-off in my mind.
The theatre department has presented us with another speculator performance.
