End of graphic design: An editorial
by Heather Canterbury
Issue date: 12/7/09 Section: Athens
Students have come to Athens for many reasons.
One of the biggest reasons is to take advantage of the academic programs.
Currently, there are many students who have been working towards their degrees in the mass communications department, namely in graphic design.
The graphic design professor informed students this semester that graphic design classes are being cut at the Athens campus as early as this spring.
This has left most students in shock and unsure of what that means for their educational future.
Information has been slim and most students still have no idea what's happening.
If graphic design is taken away from the Athens campus, any student interested in finishing his or her degree will have to commute to Demorest and pay the additional fees of $1,000 per course every semester.
Most students feel this is an unfair option. If the college accepted them as a graphic design major, then it should be the college's responsibility to come through with that degree.
Asking students to pay additional fees, as well as asking them to give the time and gas to commute an hour to another campus, can be a financial burden for many students.
This will affect class and work schedules, leading many students to have to find classes at another institution.
What is next? If the college can cut the graphic design degree with little or no notice, what degree might be next?
Will we all end up having to commute to finish our degrees?
And what about those students trying to finish the degree they started in Athens?
Will the college decide that keeping these students is less important than losing the extra money?
I hope the college thinks about these students and makes an option for them that everyone can live with.
