Piedmont is looking for a new Sports Information Director, but not for the obvious reasons.
Current SID, Richard Dombrowsky isn't leaving Piedmont College, but moving to another position within the Piedmont athletics department.
Beginning this spring, Piedmont will field a full time Junior Varsity Baseball team and Dombrowsky is the head coach. According to Piedmont's athletic director John Dzik, Piedmont has always had a JV team but, not on a full time basis.
Dzik says, "We have reached critical mass in terms of numbers and student athletes that are interested in baseball that we had to make a decision whether we were going to keep a varsity program and eliminate people or whether or not we were going to accommodate people by having a varsity and junior varsity program."
Dombrowsky says he was excited when the position was offered to him but he would have to relinquish his duties as SID. He then went home and talked over the situation with his wife.
Dombrowsky says his career aspirations are on the baseball field, so it was a dream come true and the right move for him and his family.
He says, "I'm not saying I'm the perfect man for the job, but I know I've been there and I'm really excited to help these kids out."
With the full time JV team, coaches will have the opportunity to observe up-and-coming players.
Players will also have the opportunity to work on weaknesses and hone their skills with increased practice and playing time.
Dombrowsky says that the team roster consists of 20-24 players, due to the mandates of the NCAA, but will hold practice with about 28-32 players.
As far as a new SID, no one has been hired right now, but the job posting is going to be released on certain national and south regional Web sites.
With regards to a prediction of wins/loses as his first season as coach, Dombrowsky says, "I never like to make predictions because there have been years here I thought we were going to have to scrap to get some wins and we blow it out of the water and times I think we are going to be very good and we fall short."
