RECAP:
Two Athens campus students, Jasmin Severino and Nallie Xiong, won $350 at the QEP Imagine the Future Competition, over other Piedmont teams.
The two women were the only students from the Athens campus to form a team.
They had to write a 10-page proposal and give a speech in order to win the competition.
The two students organized a fund raiser for homeless children in the Athens Area Homeless Shelter by having a student versus faculty basketball game.
Tickets were sold in the school lobby for three weeks, and they held several bake sales on campus to raise money for this cause.
A lot of volunteers were recruited to help pull this event together, including the bake sales, players, photographer and concession stand. Faculty and students alike gathered to help these children in need.
UPDATE:
The turnout for the game on Feb. 10 filled half of the Athens gym. The game consisted of four, 10-minute quarters. The faculty won with a final score of 63-38, with students demanding a rematch.
The game, combined with other fund raisers, raised a total of $440.
The $350 the women won from QEP was used to buy supplies for the game such as drinks, poster board and team shirts. Also, since the scoreboard was broken, they made scorecards themselves.
The women also collected hygiene products and educational resources at the event. The shelter they are donating to needs these types of items.
The women did not ask for coat donations because another group on the Athens campus had already taken up that action.
Severino and Xiang consider the basketball game a success.
"Sometimes I thought I was going to lose my mind. I loved every minute of it, as did Nallie. It was an amazing experience that I honestly would never trade it for anything in the world. It was so much fun, and we had a blast," says Severino.
The two women decided to support the shelter because they felt that "...life is unfair [to these children], and they did not choose to live the way they do."
Since they feel it brings the school and community together, the women hope this will become an annual event. They say this event is a way for people to help those who can't help themselves.
