Maryville defeats PC basketball teams

The Piedmont College Lady Lions basketball team fell to Maryville College 85-77 on Sunday. The game closed out the regular season for both Great South Athletic Conference teams.
Maryville began the game by outscoring the Lady Lions 13-3 and kept the momentum for the rest of the first half.
With four minutes before halftime remaining, the Lady Scots led 47-25, but Piedmont came back with a 12-5 run to cut the margin down to 15 before heading into intermission.
Piedmont started out the second frame strong by scoring a 5-0 run. Maryville kept the lead in double figures until the Lady Lions made another 5-0 run. With just over two minutes remaining, the score settled at 76-69.
Despite the rally, Piedmont could not push Maryville out of the lead. After successfully attempting free throws, the Lady Scots won the game by eight points.
Five Piedmont players reached double-figures, including Sada Wheeler, who scored 16 points and seven rebounds.
Piedmont ends the regular season 12-13 overall and 10-4 in the league.
The Lady Lions will enter the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament this week as the third seed and will face off against Salem College on Feb. 23 in the Cave Arena. The quarterfinal play-in game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
